The Monson Artists’ Residency and arts center will bring residents to the edge of Maine’s North Woods for their inaugural season. Maine College of Art & Design was one of several art schools in the country invited to select an artist to attend the summer 2018 season and be awarded a $1,000 stipend.

The representative from Maine College of Art & Design is Kyle Downs '07. Downs is a multi disciplinary artist whose practice occupies a broad spectrum – from sculpture and video, to performance and installation. Often time based and marked by his physical occupation of a space, Downs’ work is typically a reaction to his direct environment. Previous projects have explored the resurgence of nature in ecosystems impacted by industry as well as group led pre-ambles at dawn through towns to focus on the familiar in a different kind of light. Downs was born in Brunswick, Maine, and he received his BFA from Maine College of Art & Design. He has an MFA in Sculpture from the Ohio State University, where he now lives with his partner and daughter. Downs attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2014 and recently taught a course at the School of the Alternative in Black Mountain NC.
