How to apply to our MAT program

MECA&D’s community is as diverse and unique as each individual artist within it and each new student adds immeasurably to the vibrancy of our community. Applications are evaluated individually, with consideration given to the strength of the portfolio and academic achievement.

We encourage students to apply by the regular application deadline stated for the program. Each applicant is considered for merit-based scholarships upon acceptance into the college.

Deadlines for entry in Summer 2021

Early Action Deadline: December 1, 2020
Priority Deadline: February 26, 2021
After the priority deadline, we will accept applications on a rolling basis through May 1, 2021 as space permits.

All incoming MAT students must start in late July/early August with the Summer intensive. We do not offer Fall or Spring admission.

How to Apply to the MAT at MECA&D

☐ Completed SlideRoom Application

The 2021 MAT application is available on SlideRoom and can be accessed here: https://meca.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/54771

☐ Application Fee

The application fee is $70 for all applicants and is payable by credit card on the SlideRoom application. The application fee is non-refundable.

☐ Artist Statement

Please upload to your SlideRoom application an artist statement in which you describe your work within a cultural, contemporary, and historical context.

☐ Portfolio

Please submit a digital portfolio consisting of 15–20 work samples with no more than 5 minutes of film/video that is a representation of recent work, ranging from six months to a year, with accompanying image list. The list should include title, material, date and scale or duration. As you decide what to submit, remember that as an art educator you will be asked to teach a range of media. When choosing pieces, show depth in one area of your current practice as well as knowledge in a variety of media. Your portfolio can be added directly to your SlideRoom application.

☐ Full Curriculum Vitae

Your full curriculum vitae should include education, employment history, exhibitions/publications, and honors. Please upload a PDF version of your CV directly to your SlideRoom application.

☐ Official Transcripts

Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended are required, even if credit was not earned. Transcripts will be considered official if they are sent digitally to admissions@meca.edu using a digital credential service such as Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse, or in an envelope that is stamped and sealed by the issuing institution. The applicant can deliver transcripts in an unopened envelope stamped and sealed by the issuing institution.

If the previously attended institution/s is to send by mail, address it:

ATTN: MAT Admissions
Maine College of Art & Design
522 Congress Street
Portland, ME 04101

In order to award you financial aid, we need transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, even if credit was not earned.

BFA, BA, or BS in Art is required. 3.0 minimum GPA in liberal arts and 3.2 in studio courses. 30 studio credits and 12 art history credits required, however, each applicant will be evaluated on an individual basis.

☐ Two References

Teaching involves more than effective planning and instructional knowledge, a teacher’s disposition toward students and a love of art provide the basis of what we are looking for in our MAT candidates.

You will be asked to provide information — name, email, and phone number and in what capacity you know or have worked with them — for two references who can speak to your professional attitudes, beliefs and values – among them accountability, a sense of fairness, caring and integrity. Once added to the SlideRoom application and saved, they will each be asked to submit a Disposition Assessment on your behalf. They will not need to send letters of recommendation.

☐ Interview

You are required to interview virtually with the MAT Admissions Committee upon completion of your application package. Applicants will be notified via email when the application is approved for the interviewing stage. Note that you must meet the requirements listed above in order for the Office of Admissions to move forward with your application.

If you have any questions about meeting our admission requirements, please email Joel Tsui, Graduate Admissions Counselor at joel.tsui-staff@meca.edu.

☐ Praxis Tests

It is strongly recommended that you take the Core Academic Skills for Educators (5712 Reading, 5722 Writing, & 5732 Math) and the Praxis II exam (5134 Art: Content Knowledge) as soon as possible. While not a condition for acceptance, candidates are strongly encouraged to enter the program with successful completion of these exams before the August coursework begins. Successful completion is a prerequisite to entering student teaching. Learn more
