Evolving Perceptions
Explorations in Clay: Adrian King '12

Artists at Work Exhibition Space
April 7—April 19, 2017

Evolving Perceptions is a showing of functional and sculptural wares that are exploring a conversation between surface, form and the ever changing perspective of functional objects. Adrian King recently worked as an apprentice to a production potter in North Carolina by the name of Mark Hewitt. There he learned to produce functional pottery at a high standard keeping with pottery traditions tied to english slipware and southern folk pottery. Since his time working in North Carolina, he has been developing a body of work that speaks of the relationship of his interests in atmospheric firing with gas and wood, and the skills and techniques he learned as an apprentice. He hopes to be able to capture the beauty of the materials used through simple yet activating surfaces that speak true to the process of the craft.

Julie Freund '81: New Work
Charles Thomas Gallery, Second Floor, Porteous
On view through April 12
Monday–Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm

Freund's paintings are "love letters to the Maine coast," specifically familiar bodies of water near where she lives. They speak to the passage of time, the ebb and flow of the tides, seasonal shifts and the light that changes each day. Freund is especially drawn to the dynamic tension created where the land meets the sea. This new body of work captures her intense passion for color relationships, both bold and subtle. As she notes, "the colors of the water shift a thousand times during a painting session due to the light, tide, and my ability to perceive them."

Can You Use a Coin to Make a Moon?

Generation//Regeneration
Zand Head Gallery, First Floor, Porteous
April 7–April 13

The relationship between artists living at The Cedars Retirement Community and socially engaged artists from Public Engagement at MECA&D, is a collaboration between generations centered on the theme of sharing history, making, and ideas central to human connection. Using printmaking as a medium, open-ended projects led to conversations that became as much a part of the art as the objects that were created.
