Students in MECA&D's Graphic Design class Emotional Branding, taught by Adjunct Instructor Drew Hodges, were tasked with designing a poster for the 2017 TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race scheduled for August 5, 2017. Sponsored by TD bank, the 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) competition takes place along the coastline of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Starting out as a local event founded by Maine Olympic marathon winner Joan Benoit Samuelson, the race has grown to include athletes from all over the world.
The course begins at Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth and winds along tree-lined roads and past dramatic ocean vistas before ending in Fort Williams next to Portland Head Light, the nation’s first commissioned lighthouse and also the most photographed lighthouse in America. The TD Beach to Beacon attracts almost 6,500 runners, who are cheered by thousands of spectators lining the course and is assisted by 800+ volunteers, making it the largest road race in the Pine Tree State. The event promotes and celebrates health, fitness, and giving back, by benefiting selected nonprofit organizations, such as My Place Teen Center in 2016, each year.
The Beach to Beacon committee picked winner Kirk Simpson '18 to design the poster.
