Season: Residencies are available from May 31 through August 30, 2020, for one to four weeks.

Open to: individuals, families, or small groups, up to eight people total.
Due to safety concerns and complications regarding the coronavirus we made the decision last year to defer the 2020 residency programs to 2021. The means that the applicants who were accepted in 2020 will be attending during the 2021 residency season, and we will not be holding an open call for the residency programs this year.

In 2007, American artist Stephen Pace (1918-2010) bequeathed his summer home in Stonington for use by Maine College of Art & Design as a residency and gallery, to ensure its continued use as an artistic haven.
Stephen Pace was born in 1918 in Missouri and studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. He settled in New York and became an acclaimed artist known for his Abstract Expressionist work. In later years, he devoted himself to more representational paintings and drawings. Stephen and his wife, Palmina, bought the Stonington house, a turn-of-the-century sea captain’s residence set on a ledge overlooking the Penobscot Bay, in 1943. They summered there for sixty-four years, until their relocation to Indiana.
Stonington is a charming fishing village that retains the old-fashioned flavor of New England life. Lobstering is the mainstay of the economy. The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is located nearby and many artists and artisans have galleries, studios and workshops dotted throughout the island, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge.
The gallery at the Stephen Pace house is open to the public on Wednesday evenings from 5:00-7:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am-2:00pm when artists are in residence. The residency season runs from June through September. Visitors are welcome to tour the first floor of the house and the studio to view the Stephen Pace paintings.

Location, Season
Eligibility
Open to: MECA&D alumni, faculty, and staff members.
Preference for one of the residencies will be given to painters, in accordance with Stephen Pace’s bequest. Preference will be given to artists who have not been awarded a residency at the Pace House in the past two years.
Non graduated alums, SALT graduates, Post Baccalaureate graduates, Continuing Studies faculty and students are ineligible to apply.
Disciplines: visual artists, writers, scholars. Preference for one of the residencies will be given to painters, in accordance with Stephen Pace’s bequest.
Residency Information
Stipends
Funds of $750 will be awarded to mid-career artists at the discretion of the jury.
Groups
If more than one person is applying for the residency, the group should select a lead contact person who is a MECA&D faculty member, staff member or an alum. The lead contact person should submit a single application, a combined statement of purpose for the entire group, and is responsible for including all group members' documents into the application.

Studio and Special Equipment
Large studio space available in the barn. Pleasant backyard lawn and small vegetable garden. A woodland meadow is accessible through a pathway from the backyard. A scenic lily pond and the main village are within easy walking distance.
Housing
House can sleep up to eight people. There are four bedrooms and a living room. There is also a washer and dryer. A caretaker is located nearby.
Meals
Residents purchase and prepare their own meals. A variety store is located in the village and a larger supermarket is located in Deer Isle. House kitchen includes gas stove, refrigerator, microwave, dishes and cookware.
Phone/Computer/ Internet Access
House has no telephone or Internet access. Extremely limited cell phone coverage. WiFi available at Stonington Library and Deer Isle Library.
Costs
There is no fee to attend this residency.
Companions
The spouses, partners and children of selected artists are welcome for the full stay. The residency is also pet-friendly but does require a pet deposit.
All other non-family members must apply as part of team residency.
Other Facilities and Services
Many art materials are not generally accessible in the area, so it is best to bring the supplies that you will need. The store at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts carries many art supplies, but is open during limited hours.
Gallery Hours
Artists-in-residence are required to open the house to the neighboring community and visitors two days a week, as part of Stephen Pace’s bequest. During this time they must remain on the property and oversee visitors. Gallery hours are Wednesday evenings from 5:00-7:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am–2:00pm.
Deadlines
Applications for the 2022 Residency season will open on January 1st, 2022.
Review Process
A review committee comprised of the Alumni Relations & Events Coordinator, one Alumni Council member, one MECA&D faculty or staff member, and one member of the MECA&D community will award the residencies.
Proposals will be reviewed on a competitive basis. Residencies will be determined based on the quality of work submitted, evidence that the applicant's career will benefit from the residency, that the nature and scope of proposed projects fit within the space and time limitations of the residency and that the applicant is able to work independently and responsibly.

Application Requirements:
Prepare the following information in advance of submitting your application. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review.
- One-page statement of purpose explaining why you want to attend this residency
- Biography for each artist
- Resume for each artist
- Work samples descriptions
- Work samples: (10 samples for individual, 20 samples for teams)
- For artists submitting images: digital images of your work are required. All images should be formatted as jpegs with a minimum width of 800 pixels and a maximum of 1024 pixels per side, saved at a resolution of 72 dpi.
- Name your image files as follows: LastNameFirstNameNumber.jpg (i.e.PeppleKebe01.jpg, PeppleKebe02.jpg). Do not include any spaces, dashes, or other symbols when labeling your images.
- Image information, including title, date, media, and physical dimensions of each piece, must be supplied in the space below each image upload.
- For time-based/ new media work: Supply URLs for 3 links via YouTube, Vimeo or Soundcloud to video or sound pieces less than 8 minutes in length.
- For writers or scholars: 2-3 writing samples that are one to two pages long. Save your 2-3 submissions into one document.
- For artists submitting images: digital images of your work are required. All images should be formatted as jpegs with a minimum width of 800 pixels and a maximum of 1024 pixels per side, saved at a resolution of 72 dpi.
All submissions must have been completed within the last three years. All documents listed above should be saved as a Word document or a PDF.
