Dahlov Ipcar
In 2013, MECA&D recognized nationally known Maine artist Dahlov Ipcar with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Fine Arts. In her acceptance speech, she advised young artists to follow their artistic intuition and passion, along whatever path it might lead them. Now in her late 90s, Dahlov still paints every day and continues to be an inspiration to striving artists. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected, and in a career spanning more than half a century, she has written and illustrated more than 30 children’s and young adult books.
In the spring of 2014, MECA&D approached master printer David Wolfe of Wolfe Editions and Dahlov Ipcar to explore the idea of creating a limited edition fine art woodblock print to benefit student scholarships, as well as to honor Dahlov’s tremendous achievements and the legacy of the arts in Maine. Dahlov has only offered a handful of woodblock prints for sale in her career, and she was thrilled with the idea. She generously offered to donate the image of her original iconic oil painting, Odalisque (1960), and soon the collaboration was underway.
A reception at Wolfe Editions in Portland was held to celebrate the completion of the five-color print, which was created in an edition of 100, signed and numbered by the artist, and printed on Magnani paper. Over $40,000 has been raised so far. Future sales will continue to support MECA&D students while delighting buyers with a unique piece of Maine art by one of Maine’s most versatile and prodigious artists.
