Jamie Hogan
A good illustration is a drawing that tells a story.
MECA&D Adjunct Assistant Professor of Illustration Jamie Hogan has taught at MECA&D for over a decade. She also works as a professional illustrator, creating colorful pastel, charcoal and collage images for publishing, advertising and editorial clients. A member of the Maine Illustrators Collective, she is an active blogger who beautifully documents her work and the world around her. Her illustrations have appeared in publications from the Los Angeles Times to Maine magazine.
In 2015 her work was featured in the exhibit The Storybook Waters of Illustrator Jamie Hogan at the Sam L. Cohen Children’s Library at the Portland Public Library. Recent projects include illustrations for Island Birthday, a children’s picture book about a Maine island by renowned essayist Eva Murray; the children’s chapter book Tiger Boy by Mitali Perkins; and John Muir Wrestles a Waterfall by Julie Danneberg. Jamie also teaches in MECA&D’s Continuing Studies Program for which she recently co‐taught a Peaks Island Sketchbooks Workshop with colleague Judy Labrasca. Jamie lives on Peaks Island in Casco Bay, an environment that has greatly inspired her work.
In an interview with the Portland Press Herald about her book Seven Days of Daisy, asked about the difference between illustration and drawing, Jamie noted: "A good illustration is a drawing that tells a story. It’s important to have good drawing skills and use them to convey exactly what you’re being asked to convey. A good illustrator is a visual problem solver."
