Ramone Lampos '20

Maine College of Art & Design is pleased to announce that Ramone Lampos ’20 has won a 2020 International Sculpture Center Award for Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture. Ramone is one of 12 artists chosen for the award this year.

“The MECA&D Sculpture Department is excited and proud of Ramone Lampos for winning this awesome award. Ramone is extremely skilled and is the true definition of the type of transdisciplinary artists we are working with in our school,” said Joshua Reiman, Sculpture Program Chair. “Since day one, Ramone was able to push themself to engage in everything from writing and research to metalsmithing, video, photography, welding, and installation. Ramone Lampos is very deserving of this award and we look forward to seeing what happens next in their art practice beyond their education at MECA&D.”

The International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award was founded in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and encourage their continued commitment to the field of sculpture, as well as to recognize the award recipients' faculty sponsors and their institutions.

María Carolina Baulo, art historian, curator, and arts writer-critic (Buenos Aires, Argentina); Angel Cabrales, artist and educator (El Paso, TX); and Peyton Scott Russell, artist and arts instructor (Minneapolis, MN) selected 12 award recipients and 10 honorable mentions from a pool of 217 nominees from more than 100 colleges and university sculpture programs in North America and abroad.

The 12 award recipients will participate in an Artsy online exclusive exhibition from October 1 to December 31, 2020. A virtual reception will be held in conjunction with the exhibit in November 2020. The artists' work will be featured in the January/February 2021 issue of the International Sculpture Center's award-winning publication Sculpture magazine.

In the Spring of 2020, Ramone was awarded an Above and Beyond Grant from MECA&D for a residency at Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions (ACRE). Maine College of Art & Design’s Above and Beyond Grant helps currently enrolled BFA, MFA, and MAT students access structured opportunities and experiences that take them above and beyond MECA&D’s classrooms and facilities. Students learn basic skills in grant writing, budgeting, and formatting work samples while assembling proposals to fund activities such as conferences, workshops, or professional events.
